FEAT: ESP MAYHEM, POLTERGEIST 9000, BOUDICCA, BODY MELT, MODEL AUDIO, ROTWOLF

ESP MAYHEM
Mindbending the neural link between cybercore and synth grind. Three synths (fuck guitars, thats for IRL not in cyberspace) that hack into the cortex of your mind, while being jackhammered with a cyborg drum machine and verbally punished by inhumane vocals. Grindcore being pummeled to death by  machines.

POLTERGEIST 9000
“Some of the most insanely energetic live shows since forever! The duo Jaxon and Callan moved from Tasmania to Newcastle and with that move they have evolved past their noisecore and skram roots to some of the most absurdist futuristic take on Geocities and MySpace era cybercore, it’s a bastard mix of hip-hop, digital hardcore and electroclash EBM, imagine Atari Teenage Riot / Ho99o9 / Death Grips in a neon fever dream.
If late ecstasy fueled 80s house music at The Haçienda  was the counterpoint to “rock music” then Poltergeist 9000 is the counterpoint to whatever the young pretenders of the mainstream have.” -Benson

BOUDICCA
Boudicca is a thrashy hardcore punk band from Muluubinba Newcastle, informed by representations of women in folklore, myth, and history, Mad’s paint-stripper vocals lead the band in tearing stories from dust-covered books and relating them to their audiences both locally and abroad through a very cheeky, staunch, but still distinctively contemporary lens.
Featuring ex members of Dispossessed, Rort Menace, and Family Values, with that comes a varied list of influences from 80s US hardcore, d-beat, crust punk, anarcho, death metal and thrash.
Boudicca are without a doubt one of the workhorse groups coming out of the Newy hardcore scene today, they’re able to engage and surprise well-acquainted heavy music fans and unsuspecting punters alike with their unique brand of rage-fueled music.

BODY MELT
Squelchy (Arms Reach, Elbow Deep), Frenchie (Crab Smasher, Obat Batuk), Luke Wright (John Howard) and Edo (every band in Newcastle), are familiar names in the circles of Novocastian underground music. In this incarnation for this specific purpose these individuals form a vicious barrage of old school sludgy grindcore. Brainoil meets Carcinogen and Dystopia meets Noothgrush.

MODEL AUDIO.
“$8.50 each for VHS TAPES
90 Min. stereo — color. The MODEL AUDIO CLUB TAPES, as heard on radio. “Model Audio” speaks through his Sequencers; he speaks to YOU. Documentary, propagandoid Lessons far beyond any present medium .. a TOTALLY NEW GENRE. Good for over 75 close listenings. Fast-paced, dense with shocking special effects. Makes New Wave even older than it is. Unbelievable sequences from;
1) THE REAL WORLD (radio & Television)
2) THE MODEL AUDIO CLUB (excerpts from Model Audio radio and TV interviews, songs, chants, rants, and preaching), and
3) LURID ENTERTAINMENT (A 1-MAN AUDIO VISUAL ASSAULT). Savage; joyful; monstrous. Useful for seductions.”

If it’s new & The End Of Maitland Presents: ‘REPETITION COMPULSION’
Analogue and digital avant- garde
FEAT: THE LOOP ORCHESTRA, MACDOUGALL / HOPKINS / GUERRA, ABSURD COSMOS LATE NITE, ALZHEIMER BLANKS, O0o0oze

THE LOOP ORCHESTRA
Formed around 1982, while experimenting with radio programming on 2mbs fm, The Loop Orchestra was initially a group of humans operating tape machines – each person/machine/loop being responsible for a certain section (brass/strings etc.) of a musical piece, put together in real time to create the experience of an even larger ensemble. Over time, they have perhaps moved more into “a study of pure sound”, still using the same tools – with a film buff’s attention to detail and influence. The End Of Maitland is proud to present this very important Australian group as the final musical act of a festival that has both feet firmly planted in a commitment to film and music.

MAGDOUGALL / GUERRA
Mary Macdougall and Anthony Guerra are two artists that have covered much ground during their time in the open – in groups such as YOUR INTESTINES, THE BOWLES, LOVE CHANTS and WARM CURRENCY for example… in many, many collarborations, with visual art, free improvisation, design and more. Their attention to beauty, experimentation and the absurd is unique – few humans tread this delicate line between songwriting & chaos, light and dark, the avant garde and pop music. Their music is intimate, challenging and gorgeous. Much like the humans creating the sounds. A very special one-off performance, for attendees of The End Of Maitland only.

ABSURD COSMOS LATE NITE
The name truly does give one a clue as to where we’re at, but for a little more context – ACLN is a strange trip to somewhere in Australia most of us have experience with, yet (if you’re lucky) only in dreams we barely understand. Or perhaps our inner dialogue, set to an uneasy meter, critiquing and discussing, over and again. Mark Groves has been an active member of, and an inspiration for underground Australian musicians and punters for a couple of decades – many bands, labels, gigs and collaborations would not exist without his committment, drive and time. In summary (perhaps) of ABSURD COSMOS LATE NITE: “Imagine Scott Walker fired by Macquarie Group.”

ALZHEIMER BLANKS
AB’s is two people with the same brain, separated by state lines, operating 4 samplers with no sync – sans grid. Electronic music that nods in recognition of everything else they’ve heard not filtered through a DI unit. And film worship. Making a square peg fit in a round hole. Humid, psychedelic trance music (not the genre) with a healthy dose of absurdity.

oOoOoze
A mainstay of Newcastle’s experimental music scene for years, Jack & Jamey have continually challenged themselves, their collaborators and audiences with performances that are truly one-off experiences – no two gigs are even vaguely alike. Their influences are too vast to list, but they seamlessly mix up a soup of the avant garde, dance, jazz, folk and more that draw the listener into their world. A seduction perhaps.    In what is quite possibly the group’s final performance ever – oOoOoze will be opening the last musical missive of The End Of Maitland. An honour for us and you also.

‘Descent Into The Maelstrom’ (2017)
The untold story of Radio Birdman

In 1974 a group of outsiders from Sydney formed a band, RADIO BIRDMAN. Determined to do things their own way, they created a venue (The Funhouse) and self released their own music (Crying Sun Records). The members intensity and drive would eventually cause friction which led to their own end in 78, just as the ‘new rose’ of punk was blooming around the world in the late 70s, Birdman’s was over. And that was only the beginning!

“The Lost Sex Films of Kings Cross” (2025)
A showcase presention by Ex-Film with an intro and Q&A by Leon O’Regan

Counterculture bohemian artists George and Charis Schwarz were breaking taboos and pushing boundaries in the 70s, being early pioneers of Australia’s “Erotic Films”. This screening will include four short films that have been restored by film historian Leon O’Regan of Ex-Film, and will include a contextual introduction to the films and Q&A session.

THE DREAM [1970]. 3 MINUTES
The earliest explicit sex film produced in Australia for theatrical presentation. This exceptionally rare silent 8mm short was often confiscated by vice squad detectives and was rediscovered only recently hidden inside a matchbox in Darlinghurst..

SEX AIDS AND HOW TO USE THEM [1974]. 29 MINUTES
The first explicit sex film passed by the Australian censors, produced and exhibited in Australia. The highest grossing Australian short film of its time.

WELL, MY DEAR! [1975]. 46 MINUTES
The follow-up to SEX AIDS, WELL, MY DEAR was refused classification and never publicly screened. This ‘lost’ Australian sexploitation film is a time capsule of Kings Cross, shot inside the Barrel Theatre on Bayswater Road and depicting androgyny, bisexuality and the vibrant bohemian flamboyance of Sydney’s ’70s queer scene.

STAGE [1972]. 23 MINUTES
Shot inside Sandra Nelson’s A.O. Club in King’s Cross and featuring a young Mark Lewis (Cane Toads), legendary Kings Cross doorman, Peter ‘Half Mo’ Crofts and several notorious Kings Cross strippers; STAGE is a common story of abandonment. A rarely seen time capsule of Kings Cross.
